Once upon a time, most donated funds went to one’s church. Many people still believe this type of institutional giving is their responsibility and believe that the church will know how to best use the funds to achieve its ministry and missional goals.
However, a growing number of people have an alternative way of seeing giving. They believe that there should be a connection between giving and the impact it has that is clear, compelling and measurable.
Those who give have the choice of where to spend. They can chose by who gets help. Who is giving the help. How the help is given. Where the help is given. Every angle can be used to choose. Most of all, givers want to know that the funds they give will make a difference.
Church leaders must recognize this reality in order to survive. They must rise to the challenge. Their church must clearly communicate why their church is the best option for donors to see that lives will be changed. A church must be clear, very clear, about how donations will be used, the strategy for the program, the impact intended, results expected, and the results achieved.
